Causes and solutions to relieve some of your frustration.

Barking 

Most dogs vocalize in various ways whether it is a bark, howl, whine, or growl, etc. Although, in excess, vocalization can become a severe problem. A dog over expressing themselves vocally may point to underlying issues such as: 

• Alert or warning
• Anxiety
• Boredom
• Excitement 
• Responding to other dogs

To start addressing these and teach your dog to control these behaviors consider teaching “Bark/Halt,” commands to cap the behavior. The key is to be consistent and patient, along with paying close attention to the why. Understanding the cause of why your dog is barking will give you the ability to choose the best approach to correct the situation. 

Jumping

Jumping is a natural behavior for dogs to display; and dogs commonly jump out of excitement, seeking attention to reach your hand or face, but this behavior can be dangerous. They’re many ways to stop a dog from jumping but not every dog responds to the same technique. One of the most common behavior solutions is to turn your body away or even to walk away. Therefore, don’t make physical contact, eye contact, or even speak to your dog. 

Especially on entry to your home, walk right by and continue about your business until they can be calm and still, then reward your furry friend with praise. When the dog realizes that they must calm their behavior to receive your love and affection then proceed to acknowledge them. Inevitably dogs want our love and affection, therefore, be mindful of how you interact with your dog, and how you reward them. 

Begging

As hard as it is not to reward your dog with the delicious scraps from your dinner plate, this is not considered a form of reinforcement or discipline. No matter how cute and persistent they are, don’t allow them to weaken your discipline. The most efficient technique to combat this scenario is to instruct your furry friend to place.

Digging

Digging is honestly an instinctual behavior, especially dog breeds with hunting or herding backgrounds:

• Boredom, excess of energy 
• Foraging

Of course, no one likes to walk outside to see your beautiful lawn spotted with holes. Try to determine the reason before the course of action. Some easy solutions are, adding more exercise, extra training, and toys to fulfill your dog’s needs. For dogs that enjoy foraging try a snuffle mat, lastly supervise the outdoor time in order to stop the behavior as it happens.

Chewing

Chewing is a natural behavior for dog’s, it’s an important activity to support the health of the teeth and jaws. Although excessive chewing on objects such as couches, pillows, and furniture are most obviously definite. Depending on your pups age, there are a few factors that can be involved:

• Teething
• Boredom
• Anxiety
• Curiosity

Redirecting your dog by promoting other allowed items to be chewed upon is encouraged and sets a healthy boundary. Also, increasing your dog’s exercise will discourage your dog’s desire to emit energy onto destroying other objects. Watching your dog’s behaviors closely will allow you to catch those moments when they matter and maintain focus on the item you provide and allow. It’s essential to practice and continue behavior solutions techniques for the best results.
